Message from the Principal

Mission Statement: Our mission at Nottoway Intermediate School is to develop creative young minds with a sense of compassion and respect for others, a devotion to life-long learning, and a desire to be productive citizens in a diverse society.

Vision: To provide a safe, respectful and an engaging learning environment for all students.

Hello!  My name is Stephanie Poe and I am the Principal of Nottoway Intermediate School.  I am excited to welcome you and your family to our family of Nottoway Intermediate School Tigers!

I have had the privilege of being the Principal of Nottoway Intermediate School since December 2017.  I am thrilled to be a part of Nottoway Public Schools where we are Building Bridges of Success for the 21st Century.  Our focus at Nottoway Intermediate School is to develop a Growth Mindset as we incorporate 21st century learning skills and differentiation.  Each student’s success is essential to the success of the entire school.  We have high expectations for everyone that is part of our Tiger Family.

In order to achieve success, we will continue to build on the gains we have made in the area of math, while incorporating more reading strategies to help our students. In order for student success to occur, it is essential that we work together as a team and connect all the puzzle pieces: students, staff, parents, and the community. With great communication and collaboration, we will foster a love and appreciation of learning. Below are some important informational items you should be made aware of:

  • Please make sure you sign in with the office when visiting the school.
  • A photo ID will be required at all schools when checking out students. This ensures the safety of ALL children, including your child.
  • Students may not be dropped off each day until 7:45 am. Students will report to school through the cafeteria doors. All students arriving at school before 8:25 should enter through the cafeteria doors.
  • Students may report to their classroom at 8:05 each day, and instruction begins promptly at 8:27. A child is considered tardy if they arrive after 8:27 am. It is extremely important that your child is on time to school. If your child is tardy, please bring them to the office and sign them in.
  • Classroom instruction does not end until 3:07 pm, so please do not plan to pick up your child for daily dismissal until after this time. Please be prompt in picking up your child. Parents are to pick up students from the car rider line.
  • Please try to avoid last minute bus changes. The end of the day is busy and avoiding changes greatly helps our office staff. If your child needs to ride a different bus, a note is required. All last minute bus changes must be made no later than 2 p.m.
  • Car Riders- Car rider dismissal is very congested. All students that are car-riders will exit through the breeze way in the circle. The flow of traffic enters from the Intermediate School and exits by the middle school. This is a ONE WAY direction. In order to ensure the safety of all students, students will only be able to access vehicles in the lane closest to the building. They will not be able to cross over or in front of cars. We encourage children to gather their belongings quickly as we are trying to keep the traffic flow moving.
  • We will follow the attendance policy outlined in the Nottoway County Public Schools Parent/Student Handbook, therefore if your child is ill and is absent please send a note.
  • Food Items- Please be advised that due to students with food allergies/intolerances and to keep them safe at school, we are unable to have inpidual student celebrations during the school day. Teachers will coordinate any activities they may have that involve food for instructional or special events through the office and will notify if something needs to be sent to school. In the event, that food is requested all items must be store bought with a label attached.

There will be a $10 activity fee this year. There is no fee for your child’s assignment book, they are provided by our PTA. I encourage you to join the NIS PTA. As you review and fill out the registration form, please ensure that we have the correct information. This is essential for contacting you when your child is sick or any other issues arise. All 6th grade students must have had their TDAP shot before the first day of school. Students without proof of receiving the shot will not be allowed to enter school.

My desire is for every student to develop a love for learning and for school. The staff of Nottoway Intermediate School is committed to helping your child become a successful and productive member of the community.  I look forward to meeting you and working with you as we help your child grow.  Please feel free to contact me or your child’s teachers whenever we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Poe

Principal
