Superintendent's Message
Message from the Superintendent
On behalf of the Nottoway County School Board and its employees, welcome to
the 2010-2011 school year. Our goal continues to be to provide academic
excellence through a supportive school climate. We do this, first and
foremost, by continuing to attract and retain the very best teachers,
support staff, and administrative leaders. We recognize the importance of
having a shared vision with our students, parents, staff and community. With
the support of the entire Nottoway village, we will continue to make
Nottoway County Public Schools one of the best in the state.
The mission of Nottoway County Schools is to provide
opportunities that enable students to enjoy life, contribute to others’ well
being, and become responsible, productive citizens in a global community. It
is this mission that drives our school system to aspire to be great.
Nottoway County Schools continues to be an award winning school system. For
the fourth year in a row, Nottoway County Schools earned the Highly
Distinguished Title I Division Award. We also were awarded the “Competence
to Excellence” Award by the Virginia Board of Education. The Nottoway County
School Division was awarded first place in the Green Schools Challenge by
the Virginia School Board Association.
We have seen the devastating effects of the recession.
Nottoway County Public Schools lost more than 1.4 million dollars in state
funding and the potential for more cuts remains a possibility. We lost
approximately 14 staff positions this past year. Despite these issues, there
is not the slightest doubt in my mind that collectively we have the energy,
desire, enthusiasm and ability to do what is best for our students, parents
and staff. We will continue to utilize an energy savings program which can
help limit the effects of budget cuts.
Our focus this year will be on lowering the dropout
rate and increasing the number of advanced diplomas, as well as career and
technical certifications. Last year, we had ten students earn associate
degrees and 53% of our graduating seniors earned advanced diplomas.
As superintendent, I have personally seen the
tremendous efforts put forth by the dedicated teachers, staff and
administration of Nottoway County Public Schools to ensure success for all
of our students . We are proud of our accomplishments and are encouraged by
our prospects of continued growth and success.
I wish you and your child the very best this school
year.
Sincerely,
Daniel Grounard, Ed.D.
