Back to School Message from Dr. Grimes
Office of the Superintendent
Nottoway County Public Schools “Excellence in Education”
August 8, 2022
Dear Cougar Community,
We are excited to welcome our students back to school, and we eagerly await the arrival of students on Monday, August 22 – the first day of school!!!
During the summer break, we have been preparing our buildings for students’ return. As the first day of school gets closer and closer – it’s right around the corner! – I wanted to take this opportunity to 1) thank you for entrusting your children to us and 2) provide some reminders about how you can help us keep our schools free from disruption and as safe as possible for everyone.
Cell phones will need to be out of sight and on silent during each class. We value the face-to-face interactions with each other, and we continue to teach communication skills; therefore, our classrooms will be cell phone free, which will help support a learning environment that is free from disruption and distraction.
Hats and hoodies will not be allowed to be worn inside our schools. We are thrilled to have students back full-time in our buildings, and we want to see their faces! If there is a medical reason that requires your student to wear a hat or hoodie inside the school, please contact your child’s principal and provide the requested documentation.
Every student is welcome and is expected to be treated – as well as to treat others – with respect. Instances of behaviors that result in anyone being bullied – see the Code of Conduct for the definition of bullying – and/or repeatedly subjected to interactions that are harassing or threatening will be investigated and handled by school administrators. If you witness and/or hear about situations in which someone is harassed, threatened, bullied, and/or mistreated, please contact the school’s principal immediately.
As a final reminder, before children can attend school, they must have all health immunizations and proof must be provided to the school. Immunizations are not the same as the COVID vaccine, but the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC do encourage all people who are eligible to get it. Staff from the Health Department will be present at our Back-to-School Parking Lot Party on Monday, August 15 to give immunizations necessary to return to school. Please note that parents will need to see their children’s pediatrician to receive immunizations needed by children starting school for the first time.
We look forward to this being a great year. If you ever have concerns, questions, and/or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me. The number to the school board office is 434-645-9596.
Sincerely,
Tameshia V. Grimes
