Parent Information: Career Readiness Survey

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This spring our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Office of Education Economics, is participating in an international evaluation of career readiness. As part of this evaluation a career readiness survey will be given to students in 10th and 11th grades.

This evaluation aims to benchmark the career guidance system in Virginia including an examination of the key features of the system and career readiness of young people. This review will shed light on how young people experience, explore, and navigate their future pathways.

I am writing to provide you with information on the student survey. The survey will be completed online using computers at school. The survey does not ask for your student’s name and all answers are anonymous (no one will know how your student answered the survey). There is a copy of the survey available at school for your review.

The majority of survey questions are pulled directly from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Survey This survey has been fielded globally since the year 2000 in more than 90 countries to 3 million students worldwide.

All students in grades 10 and 11 will be asked to participate. The survey is voluntary, and your student can decide not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your student, or the school if you do not participate. If you do not wish for your student to participate, please notify the school office by telephone or letter by March 15, 2023.

Your student will not receive any immediate benefit from participating in the survey, but the survey will greatly help the Virginia education system and employment services to better support young people in their school-to-work transition. This survey is completely anonymous.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important career readiness.

Nottoway County Public Schools “Excellence in Education”

August 8, 2022

Dear Cougar Community,

We are excited to welcome our students back to school, and we eagerly await the arrival of students on Monday, August 22 – the first day of school!!!

During the summer break, we have been preparing our buildings for students’ return. As the first day of school gets closer and closer – it’s right around the corner! – I wanted to take this opportunity to 1) thank you for entrusting your children to us and 2) provide some reminders about how you can help us keep our schools free from disruption and as safe as possible for everyone.

Cell phones
will need to be out of sight and on silent during each class. We value the face-to-face interactions with each other, and we continue to teach communication skills; therefore, our classrooms will be cell phone free, which will help support a learning environment that is free from disruption and distraction.

Hats and hoodies
will not be allowed to be worn inside our schools. We are thrilled to have students back full-time in our buildings, and we want to see their faces! If there is a medical reason that requires your student to wear a hat or hoodie inside the school, please contact your child’s principal and provide the requested documentation.

Every student is welcome and is expected to be treated – as well as to treat others – with respect. Instances of behaviors that result in anyone being bullied – see the Code of Conduct for the definition of bullying – and/or repeatedly subjected to interactions that are harassing or threatening will be investigated and handled by school administrators. If you witness and/or hear about situations in which someone is harassed, threatened, bullied, and/or mistreated, please contact the school’s principal immediately.

As a final reminder, before children can attend school, they must have all health immunizations and proof must be provided to the school. Immunizations are not the same as the COVID vaccine, but the Virginia Department of Health and the CDC do encourage all people who are eligible to get it. Staff from the Health Department will be present at our Back-to-School Parking Lot Party on Monday, August 15 to give immunizations necessary to return to school. Please note that parents will need to see their children’s pediatrician to receive immunizations needed by children starting school for the first time.

We look forward to this being a great year. If you ever have concerns, questions, and/or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me. The number to the school board office is 434-645-9596.
