Nottoway County Public Schools (NCPS) presents the 3rd Edition of the Transition to Success Newsletter. Each month, the newsletter focuses on a key life skill to help students grow into independent, confident, and capable young adults.
Theme of the Month: Decision-Making and Problem-Solving
For November, the focus is on decision-making and problem-solving. These are essential skills for school, home, and the future. Families play an important role in helping children learn to make thoughtful choices and understand the impact of their decisions.
Quick Family Tip: Help students of all ages practice thoughtful decision-making and problem-solving at home and in the community. This month, try giving your child a "choice of two" and talk through the results together. Small, guided choices help children practice thinking ahead, taking responsibility, and learning from outcomes.
At Home Activities
Elementary School:
Choice of Two: Let your child pick between two chores.
Story Time Decisions: Pause during story reading to ask, "What could the character do next?".
Reflect Together: Talk about how their choices made them feel and what they might do differently next time.
Middle School:
Decision Diary: Encourage your student to write about one decision they made this week—what happened and what they learned.
Pros & Cons Game: Before making a choice (like which elective to take), list the pros and cons together.
Family Debates: Pick a fun topic and let everyone make their case respectfully.
High School:
Real-World Decisions: Discuss choices around budgeting, scheduling, or peer relationships.
Problem-Solving Steps: Model how to define a problem, brainstorm options, consider outcomes, and choose a solution.
Career Connections: Talk about how decision-making and problem-solving apply to jobs or postsecondary goals.
