transition to success

Dear Parents, Families, and Students, Welcome to the second edition of NCPS Transition to Success!

This month, our focus is “Job Skills at Home”—simple tasks like folding laundry, wiping tables, or organizing shelves help build responsibility, independence, and habits employers value. Transition happens both at school and at home, and these small chores make a big difference in preparing for life after high school.

We’re also excited to host a Coffee and Chat on Tuesday, October 13, from 4–6 PM. Representatives from DARS and CTI will be available, with information from PEATC and hopefully AbleNow. Cougar Café will be there selling their delicious drinks. Come enjoy coffee, connect with resources, and learn more about supporting your student’s transition journey!

Theme of the Month: Job Skills At Home At Home Activities: ✏ Elementary School: Chore Cards Game – Write simple chores on cards (e.g., match socks, wipe doorknobs). Let your child pick 1–2 cards to “complete their shift.” Use a sticker chart to show progress and build motivation. 🧩 Middle School: 15-Minute Room Reset – Set a timer for 15 minutes. Ask your child to clean, organize, or sort items in their room or a shared space. Reflect together on how this practice relates to real workplace expectations. 🎓 High School: “Work-From-Home” Simulation – Assign a real-world job task: organize a pantry shelf, write a shopping list with prices, or plan a weekly calendar. Track time, evaluate the outcome, and discuss improvements.

💬 Quick Family Tip: Treat home tasks like “jobs.” Give them a start and end time, clear steps, and a way to track progress (like a checklist or sticker chart). Praise effort and consistency!
