Nottoway County Public Schools (NCPS) is committed to ensuring all children have access to the services they need to learn and thrive. Child Find is a legal requirement under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), mandating public school divisions to identify, locate, and evaluate children who may have disabilities and need special education and related services.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
NCPS supports the identification and evaluation of students ages 2-21 who may be suspected of having a disability, including:
Children attending public, private, or home schools
Children who are homeless or highly mobile
Children not yet enrolled in school (ages 2-5) who may have developmental delays
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
If your child or a child you know shows any of the following signs, they may be eligible for evaluation and special education services:
Speech or language delays
Difficulty with learning, reading, or math
Behavioral or emotional challenges
Physical or developmental delays
Trouble with vision or hearing
REFERRAL PROCESS
The referral process includes:
Referral submission
Review of existing data
Determination of need for evaluation
Comprehensive evaluation (if warranted)
Eligibility meeting and plan for services (if eligible)
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO
If you suspect your child may need special education services, contact your child's school or the NCPS Department of Exceptional Education. A referral for evaluation may be made by a parent, guardian, teacher, or other school personnel.
