Child Find Header

Nottoway County Public Schools (NCPS) is committed to ensuring all children have access to the services they need to learn and thrive. Child Find is a legal requirement under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), mandating public school divisions to identify, locate, and evaluate children who may have disabilities and need special education and related services.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

NCPS supports the identification and evaluation of students ages 2-21 who may be suspected of having a disability, including:

  • Children attending public, private, or home schools

  • Children who are homeless or highly mobile

  • Children not yet enrolled in school (ages 2-5) who may have developmental delays

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

If your child or a child you know shows any of the following signs, they may be eligible for evaluation and special education services:

  • Speech or language delays

  • Difficulty with learning, reading, or math

  • Behavioral or emotional challenges

  • Physical or developmental delays

  • Trouble with vision or hearing

REFERRAL PROCESS

The referral process includes:

  1. Referral submission

  2. Review of existing data

  3. Determination of need for evaluation

  4. Comprehensive evaluation (if warranted)

  5. Eligibility meeting and plan for services (if eligible)

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO

If you suspect your child may need special education services, contact your child's school or the NCPS Department of Exceptional Education. A referral for evaluation may be made by a parent, guardian, teacher, or other school personnel.

NCPS IS HERE TO HELP! Our goal is to ensure every child receives the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Early identification and intervention make a significant difference in a child's success in school and beyond.
