TRANSITION TO SUCCESS

April 2026 Vol. 1, Issue 8

Welcome to the 8th Edition of the NCPS Transition to Success Newsletter! Each month, we highlight a key life skill to support students as they grow into independent, confident, and capable young adults.

Theme of the Month: Transportation and Community Access

For April, our focus is on Transportation & Community Access. Students could practice important life skills such as reading simple maps, taking short supervised walks, and learning how to use public transportation safely. These activities are designed to help students build confidence and independence in their daily routines.

Families are encouraged to practice these activities at home and in the community whenever possible. Talking about experiences and providing opportunities to use these skills can help students feel more comfortable and capable as they learn to navigate their surroundings safely.

At Home Activities:

Elementary School

  • Practice identifying community places (home, school, store) on a simple map.

  • Take short walks with an adult and talk about street safety.

  • Learn to recognize common community signs and symbols.

Middle School

  • Practice planning a short route using a simple map or directions.

  • Take supervised walks to nearby locations and identify safe routes.

  • Learn basic bus safety rules and practice reading a simple bus schedule.

High School

  • Plan and practice a route to a familiar location using public transportation.

  • Ride public transportation with support and practice appropriate behavior and problem-solving.

  • Identify community resources (stores, libraries, workplaces) and how to access them independently.

Quick Tip:

Start small and practice familiar routes, then slowly introduce new skills like maps or public transportation. Encouragement and consistency help build confidence and independence.
