Parent Information regarding updates for potential inclement weather.
January 22, 2026
NCPS Families,
As we closely monitor the impending weather forecast, we want to ensure all families and staff clearly understand our school closure procedures and what to expect should changes to the school schedule become necessary. Preparation and clear communication are essential to minimizing disruptions for our students and families.
Decision Timeline
The division plans to make any decision regarding a school closure or remote (asynchronous) learning day by 6:00 p.m. whenever possible.
If no message is received by 6:00 p.m., the next update will be provided by 6:00 a.m. the following morning.
We will avoid early-morning notifications whenever possible, as we understand this can create challenges and concerns for families.
School Closures vs. Remote (Asynchronous) Learning Days
It is important to understand the difference between these two types of days:
School Closure
All communications (television, Facebook, and school messaging platforms) will clearly state that schools are closed.
Students are not required to complete any packets or schoolwork on these days.
Remote (Asynchronous) Learning Day
Communications will clearly indicate a remote/asynchronous learning day.
Students are expected to complete the designated day of work from their learning packet.
Completed packets will be due to the school upon return.
The Code of Virginia requires schools to be in session for 180 days or 990 instructional hours. School closures can result in learning loss and disruption of student routines, and we are taking proactive steps to mitigate these impacts if weather conditions require schedule adjustments.
Preparation Steps
To support families and students, the following preparations are underway:
Schools are preparing up to four days of at-home learning packets focused on review (not new instruction).
On Friday, students will be sent home with two days of meals (breakfast and lunch).
Please talk with your child about bringing these items home.
Once received, items should be placed in their backpack.
Students should not eat on the bus and must follow all transportation expectations.
If there is a prolonged closure, additional food pick-up opportunities will be provided for NCPS families.
Teacher Availability
During remote/asynchronous learning days:
Teachers will be available during normal school hours via email or their preferred communication method.
Please note there may be a delay in responses.
Teachers will communicate specific expectations and contact methods with families in the coming days.
Support for Students with IEPs or 504 Plans
Families of students with IEPs or 504 plans may reach out with any questions or concerns to:
Amanda Atkinson, Special Education Coordinator – 434-480-8584
Delphine Simmons-Fowlkes, Special Education Coordinator – 434-480-8585
Dr. Carrie Gravely, Director of Exceptional Education & Special Programs – 434-480-8569
Return of Materials
All learning packets are expected to be returned on the first day school resumes.
We are committed to ensuring your child has access to learning materials, meals, and support during this time. Thank you for your partnership and preparation. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school directly.
Sincerely,
Marcia H. Martin, Ed.D.

Be a part of the conversation happening across the state! Starting on December 22nd, we will be participating in the Virginia Speak Up Research Project. The national Speak Up is the first survey designed to help families share their ideas about the use of technology in schools directly with schools and national policymakers. Speak Up provides parents and guardians with a mechanism for expressing their views to the administrators at their child(ren)’s school and division about key issues impacting their child(ren)'s education.
Since 2003, Speak Up has collected and shared the views of more than 6.3 million students, teachers, and parents/guardians from across the country. By participating in the Virginia Speak Up, you are expressing your views to a wider audience of local, state, and national policy makers —and contributing to the national dialogue about how best to prepare students for the future.
The online survey is open to students, educators, and parents/guardians; it’s quick and easy to get involved. All participation is 100% confidential. Surveys take about 15 minutes to complete.
